Colin D'Cruz [Indo-Jazz fusion artist]
Colin D'Cruz got into music as a bassplayer with resident bands at some of the finest hotels in India. Ten years of six nights a week gigs, laid the foundation for a long and checkered career that took him through just about every genre of music, collaborating with all kinds of musicians, on assignments all over the world. An open mind, open ears and 'best is yet to come' philosophy keeps him in tune with evolving sounds of music and widens his musical horizons on a continuous basis. Colin may perform several different genres of music, with various ensembles, at any given point of time, but he always finds himself at home with jazz-the most open, alive and evolving form of music.
The Brown Indian Band has been formed by bassplayer Colin D'Cruz and features accomplished Indian classical musicians in concert with jazz musicians. Indian classical music can be compared to jazz as both are forms of improvised music. Indian classical music is linear and uses just one scale (Raga) to improvise within a composition whereas jazz has a much broader palette for improvisation where multiple scales can be used to improvise through harmonic changes. Indian classical music however, has some of the world's most complex rhythm structures and subtle quarter tones that add an exciting new dimension to jazz. The Brown Indian Band uses the best of both styles to create a very funky sound of world music. The band has floating personnel that very often features visiting international jazz artistes. The Brown Indian Band is managed by Raga to Rock an artiste management and record company based in Mumbai.
